Erythrocruorin: a hemoglobin built to work outside the cell.

For decades, hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers failed because human hemoglobin is unstable outside of red blood cells. Erythrocruorin, the extracellular hemoglobin of annelids, already carries oxygen in circulation without a cell around it.
